LESSON 28 / 30 · Evidence before confidence

Nonconformity, correction, causes, corrective action and improvement

Establish the failed requirement, fix the problem, investigate causes and check effectiveness.

FREE LESSONFICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

After this lesson, try to

  • Separate nonconformity, concern, incident and vulnerability.
  • Distinguish correction, cause analysis and corrective action.
  • Choose effectiveness evidence beyond action completion.

Establish the requirement and evidence

A nonconformity is a failure to meet a requirement. A useful finding links the applicable requirement, verified evidence and the specific failure. A concern without an identified applicable requirement is not automatically a defensible nonconformity. Preserve the distinction between a vulnerability, an incident, a nonconformity and an opportunity for improvement.

Correction and corrective action answer different questions

Correction aims to eliminate the detected nonconformity. Cause analysis investigates why it happened and what conditions sustained it. Corrective action aims to eliminate its cause or causes and prevent recurrence; it should follow evidence rather than defaulting to blame or assuming that retraining solves every problem. A fixed number of “whys” is not a universal requirement.

Check effectiveness before declaring success

An implemented action is not yet proof that the cause has been controlled. Review suitable evidence of the result and document the outcome. Improvement can extend beyond correcting one nonconformity and should reflect priorities and resources. In the ISO/IEC 27001:2022 structure, continual improvement is 10.1 and nonconformity/corrective action is 10.2; confirm the edition when using a clause reference.

Make it your own.

For a fictional missing invoice approval, state the requirement, evidence, correction, cause-based action and later check.

Use fictional information. Writing an answer helps expose assumptions; this exercise is not independently marked.

SCOPE, PRACTICE AND ACCESS

What to take further.

Coverage and remaining teaching

  • ISO07: Complete authorized 10.1/10.2 requirements and provider interpretation/feedback on varied action plans.
  • ISO09: Complete the required official PECB Foundation course and its activities through the selected authorized route.

Practice and feedback

  • ISO07: Additional fresh cases in which correction, cause evaluation, needed action and effective closure differ. Evidence of real operation is outside this paper case.
  • ISO09: Obtain actual provider materials, included practice, feedback and exact standards-access arrangements. Complete the separate assessment and application under current issuer rules.

Free and paid resources

The linked applied guides and their paper activities are free; no cloud purchase or real-system test is needed. The selected official PECB course remains paid. Full licensed standards require legitimate access; additional purchases depend on what the provider, employer or library already supplies. Official examination and maintenance charges follow issuer terms. Optional paid training or feedback is distinct from these free exercises.
