After this lesson, try to
- Distinguish hardware, software, information and services.
- Describe an asset using its purpose, owner and dependencies.
- Explain how one missing dependency can interrupt a service.
Start with what the organization needs
Hardware is the physical equipment. An operating system manages resources and provides a platform for applications; applications perform user or business tasks. A network connects systems so that they can exchange information. Information becomes useful through its meaning and context, rather than merely through being stored as bits.
An asset is broader than a laptop
Important assets can include information, paper records, people and their knowledge, services, software, devices, facilities and the processes that depend on them. An inventory connects an asset to its purpose, responsible owner and status. It helps answer what exists, what matters, and who can make decisions about it. A cloud service still needs an owner even when another company owns the hardware.
Follow dependencies
A business service can depend on accounts, network access, an application, a provider and people who know how to operate it. Protecting the device alone may leave the service exposed. Asset and data-flow knowledge supports access decisions, risk assessment, recovery priorities and incident investigation.
Make it your own.
For fictional Example Studio, list six assets supporting bookings. Give each an owner, purpose and dependency.
Use fictional information. Writing an answer helps expose assumptions; this exercise is not independently marked.

Practice and feedback
- Build a fictional inventory and dependency map. This site does not independently mark a beginner lab.
