Professional conduct, due care and due diligence

Make professional judgments within your competence and the evidence available.

FREE LESSONFICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

After this lesson, try to

  • Apply ethical duties to conflicting responsibilities.
  • Distinguish due care and diligence without a rigid before/after rule.
  • Write an assurance statement with its material limits.

Professional judgment is part of security

ISC2’s ethical expectations address public and societal interests, honest and lawful conduct, competent service and the standing of the profession. Apply them together when duties conflict; remembering short labels does not settle every dilemma. Competence includes recognizing when a decision needs a qualified specialist rather than inventing assurance.

Care and diligence are related, not a universal timeline

ISACA describes due care through the reasonable conduct expected of a person with comparable competence in similar conditions. Due diligence emphasizes prudent and thorough investigation, review and analysis. An organization may investigate a supplier before selection and continue checking it later; it also needs reasonable care throughout. The shortcut “diligence happens before, care happens after” is too rigid.

Keep claims proportional to evidence

A document, completed checklist or passing practice score supports only what was actually checked. Report uncertainty, unresolved exceptions and the limits of your authority. Government and professional publishers can improve provenance, but a publisher logo does not make every interpretation current or every lesson accredited.

Make it your own.

A fictional manager requests a fully compliant label after a short checklist. State what was examined and what needs review.

Use fictional information. Writing an answer helps expose assumptions; this exercise is not independently marked.

Practice and feedback

  • Compare fresh dilemmas with legitimate feedback; fictional examples have no issuer-approved key.

A reading acknowledgement tracks your place; it does not establish competence or course completion.
