After this lesson, try to
- Separate continuity, disaster recovery, redundancy and backups.
- Explain the role of a BIA.
- Distinguish MTD, RTO and RPO in a timed scenario.
Protect the service, then plan its recovery
Business continuity concerns keeping important activities operating through disruption. Disaster recovery focuses on restoring technology and data that support them. Redundancy provides alternative capacity, but a shared failure, incorrect configuration or corrupted data can affect more than one copy. A backup is useful only if the required data and service can be recovered appropriately.
Use a business impact analysis
A BIA connects business processes, systems and dependencies to disruption consequences and recovery priorities. It helps determine which resources need to return first rather than assuming every device is equally urgent. Owners must agree the impacts and tolerances; a technology team should not invent business tolerances alone.
Keep the time concepts separate
Maximum tolerable downtime (MTD) is the business’s tolerable total disruption window. Recovery time objective (RTO) concerns how long a resource can remain unavailable before impacts become unacceptable; it is normally shorter than MTD to allow business recovery work. Recovery point objective (RPO) concerns the point before the disruption to which data should be recoverable: it expresses a tolerable data-loss window, not the time needed to restore a server.
Test and learn
Training clarifies responsibilities; exercises explore plans and coordination; tests help validate systems and recovery capabilities. Record outcomes and lessons, assign improvements and revisit assumptions. A plan’s existence or a successful backup job does not prove that recovery meets the agreed objectives.
Identify the recoverable parts of an AI service
Editorial application: AI-dependent work may rely on model versions, configurations, datasets and provider services as well as ordinary application data. Establish what must be recoverable and who is responsible. A SaaS customer may not possess the provider’s model files. Recovery should restore usable performance for the agreed use, rather than merely restore a file.
Make it your own.
Set fictional booking-service RTO, RPO and MTD values. Compare a recovery timeline and explain its limits.
Use fictional information. Writing an answer helps expose assumptions; this exercise is not independently marked.

INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL SUPPLIED · Introductory worked teaching and guided self-check now address every named teaching element and artifact. Independent marking and a real restoration exercise remain separate unresolved needs.

Practice and feedback
- AI02: A guided paper case and explained model are available; independent review of fresh learner work and any live validation remain separate.
