LESSON 23 / 30 · From controls to a system

What an ISMS is, the standards family and PDCA

Move from controls to a recurring system of direction, resources, operation, evaluation and improvement.

FREE LESSONFICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

After this lesson, try to

  • Explain why an ISMS is more than tools or documents.
  • Distinguish roles and editions of the ISO 27000 family.
  • Use PDCA without inventing a normative clause map.

A management system connects recurring activities

An ISMS organizes how an organization directs and controls information security through linked policies, objectives, responsibilities, processes, resources and review. It is broader than a security product, an IT department or a collection of documents. Its value depends on operation, evidence and improvement, rather than merely owning a certificate or template.

Keep the family documents distinct

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 is the selected ISMS requirements standard. ISO/IEC 27002:2022 provides control guidance; ISO/IEC 27005:2022 supports information-security risk management. ISO/IEC 27000:2026 is now an overview of concepts, principles and relationships; the withdrawn 2018 edition’s vocabulary role must not be presented as the current overview’s purpose. ISO/IEC 27003:2017 explains implementation in relation to the 2013 edition, so only its role is used here. New publication does not automatically replace a dated normative or exam reference.

Understand the structure without inventing the requirements

The 2022 management-system structure runs from context and leadership through planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement in clauses 4–10. A short public clause overview helps orientation; it is not the full standard. ISO 9001 concerns quality management and ISO/IEC 20000-1 service management; their guidance does not supply ISO 27001 requirements by substitution.

Use PDCA to connect work and learning

Plan establishes objectives and an approach; Do performs the work; Check evaluates results; Act uses decisions to improve. The selected ISACA example applies that loop to security work. It is a useful management pattern, not a complete normative clause-by-clause map or a one-time implementation project.

Make it your own.

Explain a fictional export-control improvement through Plan, Do, Check and Act, including ownership and evidence.

Use fictional information. Writing an answer helps expose assumptions; this exercise is not independently marked.

Connect the terminology.

SCOPE, PRACTICE AND ACCESS

What to take further.

Coverage and remaining teaching

  • ISO02: Complete exact clauses 4–5 and any applicable defined terms, checked against legitimate current standard access.
  • ISO09: Complete the required official PECB Foundation course and its activities through the selected authorized route.

Practice and feedback

  • ISO02: Provider clarification of Amendment 1:2024 in the selected course and exam. Review of additional new cases with authorized course feedback.
  • ISO09: Obtain actual provider materials, included practice, feedback and exact standards-access arrangements. Complete the separate assessment and application under current issuer rules.

Free and paid resources

The linked applied guides and their paper activities are free; no cloud purchase or real-system test is needed. The selected official PECB course remains paid. Full licensed standards require legitimate access; additional purchases depend on what the provider, employer or library already supplies. Official examination and maintenance charges follow issuer terms. Optional paid training or feedback is distinct from these free exercises.

A reading acknowledgement tracks your place; it does not establish competence or course completion.
