LESSON 25 / 30 · From controls to a system

ISMS objectives, risk treatment, applicability and controls

Connect objectives, treatment and applicability so a control has a reason and evidence.

FREE LESSONFICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

After this lesson, try to

  • Separate a desired outcome from an activity.
  • Trace risk decisions to treatment and residual exposure.
  • Explain a Statement of Applicability and the four control themes.

Objectives need a way to evaluate progress

Connect a security objective to an organizational need and define how to tell whether it is being achieved. Distinguish a desired result from an activity: conducting training is an action; improving a specified capability is an outcome. Measures and resources should support the decision. Exact ISO objective-planning requirements remain with the authorized text/course.

Link assessment to treatment and acceptance

Use the risk reasoning in section 5 to understand the decision, then connect selected controls and other actions to the risks they address. Document ownership, implementation and remaining exposure. Treatment changes risk; it does not guarantee elimination. ISO-specific evaluation, approval and acceptance requirements cannot be inferred from a NIST example alone.

Understand the purpose of the SoA

A Statement of Applicability connects the organization’s control choices and their justification/status to the ISMS context and risk treatment. It is not simply a copied list of technologies. Full required contents, comparison with Annex A and justifications must be learned from the current course/standard; this guide does not reconstruct the normative checklist.

The four themes are an introduction, not full control teaching

The public PECB examples group controls into organizational, people, physical and technological themes. Examples include policy/incident processes, training/screening, secure areas/equipment and access/cryptography. The 2022 Annex A overview has 93 controls across four themes, but a few introductory examples do not teach all 93 or establish which controls a particular organization needs. Confirm the required learning depth with the official course; the overview does not establish a memorization rule.

Make it your own.

Build five illustrative fictional controls with risks, rationale, owner, evidence and effectiveness checks. Explain why this is not a full SoA.

Use fictional information. Writing an answer helps expose assumptions; this exercise is not independently marked.

SCOPE, PRACTICE AND ACCESS

What to take further.

Coverage and remaining teaching

  • ISO03: Complete exact 6.1 requirements, a complete SoA and justified review of the full Annex A reference set.
  • ISO08: Authorized purpose, function, applicability and implementation teaching across the complete 93-control reference set at the selected Foundation depth.
  • ISO09: Complete the required official PECB Foundation course and its activities through the selected authorized route.

Practice and feedback

  • ISO03: Authorized provider feedback on additional methods, treatment decisions and applicability cases. Detailed control purposes/implementation guidance beyond the selected examples.
  • ISO08: Complete SoA comparison and justifications; the short example matrix is not the full control set. Exact 27002 control attributes and provider classification expectations with authorized feedback.
  • ISO09: Obtain actual provider materials, included practice, feedback and exact standards-access arrangements. Complete the separate assessment and application under current issuer rules.

Free and paid resources

The linked applied guides and their paper activities are free; no cloud purchase or real-system test is needed. The selected official PECB course remains paid. Full licensed standards require legitimate access; additional purchases depend on what the provider, employer or library already supplies. Official examination and maintenance charges follow issuer terms. Optional paid training or feedback is distinct from these free exercises.
